Important checklist for Florida estate planning

Are you planning your estate in St. Petersburg, Florida? If so, you are making an important decision that affects not only you but also everyone else in your family. This is an especially important undertaking if you have minor children. Planning out your estate before it's too late makes it easier for everyone to move on after your death.

By preparing ahead of time, you will be able to prevent fighting among your children (if they are adults), fighting among your siblings and any other familial issues that could arise at the time of your death.

The first thing you need to do is write down a list of the following:

  • Credit card numbers
  • Bank accounts
  • Retirement and investment accounts
  • Tax records
  • Life insurance policies
  • Safe-deposit box numbers
  • Login names and passwords for all of the above
  • Locations for all of the above

Keep this list updated often and tell the executor of your estate where you keep it. This will help the executor carry out your wishes upon your death.

The will that you create must be as clear as possible. All of your wishes need to be clearly stated so that the executor has no questions and does not wind up making any mistakes when carrying out your wishes.

You need to speak openly with your family about your decisions. Let your family know who you picked as executor and why. Honesty will go a long way in this situation.

Have you checked off every item on the estate-planning checklist presented in this post? If not, make sure you hit every item so you protect yourself and your family upon your death in Florida.
